Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area. You will have to remove the trunk floor coverings and the rear and side scuff panels to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area. It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

ModuLite Powered Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This power module functions as a tail light converter to combine the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Worked exactly how it’s suppose to the install video on the website is very detailed and easy to follow

I usually don't have time to write a review. but because I really like how easy was the installation and the wiring instruction that you guys posted in your website. I am writing now to appreciate the business we done. the Hitch design and material well done.I received the items on time. the job took 2 hours for both hitch and wiring.
you deserve 5 stars.

Product was exactly what was described and worked perfectly. Communication was 5 star which is important to me when ordering on-line. Highly recommend this seller!

Received the Draw-Tite 75217 trailer hitch for my 2016 Mazda CX-5 sooner than expected, along with the 118563 wiring harness, all in excellent condition. I chose the 2" class III Draw-Tite hitch over the class II, 1-1/4" hitch offered by Mazda at 3 times the cost. Pretty easy install after viewing the installation videos on etrailer.com. One really nice feature was it came with 4 bolt wire guides instead of the 2 that other reviews commented on, nice to see they take customer feedback seriously !!

I plan to use it to pull a small trailer I own, a small U-haul trailer and for a bike rack (without needing a stabilizing strap).

After a year of intermittent towing, I still love the hitch and wiring harness, no problems with either.

by:

This harness installed fine; my complaints go toward the Mazda engineers. However, since it was my first time, it took me nearly 10 hours to run the ONE power wire from the back, under the car, over the rear subframe, through the aero panels, up the brake line (staying away from the exhaust), around the battery, and then secured to the batter using lots of wire loom and zip/nylon ties (more than what was in the package). The wire follies were not the kit's fault. It might have taken less time is I went under the carpet (on the inside), but I won't know unless I do another one. So far, so good. Sorry, pics are all on my phone.

after a year, the harness and power wire are doing fine. for less hassle, I need to to run the connector through the grommet on the drivers side and out of the car. I hate smashing the wire with the tailgate each time I tow its only been three times, but hated smashing the wires on each one. a bit of extra sealant on the grommet and we are good to go...now just need to find the time.

by:

Absolutely the best product I could have asked for. I watched the video on your site and installed my trailer wiring harness in less than an hour. The support that etrailer gives is unmatched . It is exactly what I was looking for, no vehicle wire needed cutting ,no soldering just plug in the supplied harness and run the vehicle power supply. You even showed where the most convenient place to get power was and everything worked perfectly the first shot. Great job etrailer!

Works just fine!

by:

Delivered on time and easy installation. Minimal wiring work was needed, anyone who can crimp 4 connectors and run a wire can install this harness. I would recommend following the installation video, it is much more detailed and gives better recommendations on how to properly run the power cable from the battery while avoiding the power train heat shields.

PS: Dont forget to get a Zinc plated M6 nut to connect to the battery (part # 185916) I had to run to the local big box store to get one.

One year later and the wiring kit is working great. I am not crazy about how the wiring harness just hangs out the back of the trunk, as the trunk has taken a few chunks out of the wire while closing. Overall though great product and would buy again.

That's a bummer Brant. I see we sent you the warranty info but I can help you troubleshoot it if you want to do some testing. First, I need to know what exactly is happening when you try to use the wiring harness? Are any of the functions working or is it not working at all (no power)?

Product has been great. No problems at all

by:

Installed a receiver hitch on a leased Mazda CX-5 and wanted the option to take it back off if at the end of the lease. The wiring harness installation was a breeze with this kit. Running the long power feed to the battery took a while but I'll be able to remove the whole unit easily, if needed. The product has been working as expected and doing business with eTrailer is painless. Their online resources and support team have been very helpful with this project.

by:

I appreciate that etrailer provides incredible information to help choose the most compatible parts and accessories for my vehicles and purpose. I needed a sturdy receiver hitch and wanted one that showed the minimal appearance distraction. Once I got the hitch, the video instructions for installing the hitch saved me from a good deal of wasted time sorting out what order to take the exhaust down, install hitch and route wiring and restore exhaust. All in all, I saved a substantial amount of money doing it myself and never felt frustrated by lack of specific experience. Stress-free experience.

by:

Great products and fast delivery. I installed on a 2015 CX5. Getting exhaust removed from 4 rubber hangers was fun (soap does help). Next challenge was fitting the hitch between the exhaust and car frame by yourself. I ended up grabbing a bunch of scrap lumber and propped the hitch up. It is quite heavy and awkward working in your garage (not up on a lift like the pro's). I had problems clearing the rubber bumper but after lots of adjustments and getting the hitch supported with wood I got it. Wires that hold the bolts work great. Wiring package instructions were okay once I understood what they meant. Took a little to digest without pictures. All in all, went well, certainly not 20 minutes, more like 1 hour or more for hitch, and 1-2 hours for wiring - removing panels and feeding wire to battery took some time. I did crack 2 pieces of my trim popping the plastic parts up with a screw driver and fingers. Did not help it was very cold over Christmas time when I did this. Towed my pop up trailer 1000 miles without an issue. So can't complain!

by:

I received the trailer hitch and associated products on time and installed them according to the very helpful instructional video. I have used the trailer many times and have never had a problem. The old trailer itself had a short in the lights that blew out the fuse. When repaired, the fuse was easy to replace because it was so accessible.

by:

I purchased a Curt trailer hitch and T-One harness for my 2014 Mazda cx-5. I was anxious about buying the direct battery powered harness because of the extra hassle of running the hot wire to the battery. However, that part of the installation wasn't bad. I was able to easily slip the wire under the plastic trim inside the car and cut a small nipple on the rubber boot protecting the wires on motor side of the fire wall and pull the wire through that hole into the motor area. I used a 14 gauge house wire that I duct taped end to end with the flexible power wire. The hard house wire was easy to push through the hole in the boot and work through an existing, big opening in the interior. The end to end taping allowed me to pull the black power wire through the small hole into the motor area. The wire is very tight in the hole so there should be no water leak into the car. I also put a dab of silicone caulk on it since I am a belt and suspenders kind of guy.
The hitch was a great fit and the wire bolt holders were great. Getting the rubber isolators off and on was a much bigger deal than in the video, but, with persistance not too bad. I torqued the bolts as recommended which was about 0.5 to 1 turn more than my hand tight set. Glad I used the torque wrench.

by:

Very simple tie in with the tail lights using the mating connectors. I routed the trailer pigtail through the grommet so it would be outside the car. The run up to the battery was a good exercise for the wife who spent a few hours under the car. I don't know why they didn't include the nut for the battery tie in or use the correct size terminal lug but the right size parts were available at my local hardware store. All in all a very good product.

by:

I haven't installed it yet, but like the hitch this seems like a quality product with everything included.

I watched the video and again, like the hitch, it was for my vehicle and was step by step. The toughest part is all of the interior molding that needs to be removed and that is not tough.

I really like how connectors are used instead of using side taps or splices.

I'm not too wild about snaking a power wire up to the battery, but that is only because I have to do it on my back since I don't have a lift. I'll get over it.

It would have been nice if I knew I needed to buy the attachments for the the connector separately. It probably said on the site and I just missed it. I will need to order the two attaching plates before I start to install.

From the looks of it, this will not be hard to install. It seems like a quality product. And, I would recommend it at this point. I don't think I will change my mind after installing.

by:

Easy installation . Reviewing the videos helped guided how to remove the proper panels of the vehicle. I choose to guide the power wire inside the car by removing the left side door sills, and zip tied it to the existing wire harness. Then I followed along the wire harness through the firewall where the rubber grommet is.Then to the battery.

by:

I bought a hitch and plug-n-play wiring for our 2015 Mazda CX-5. Everything worked as expected and I installed it myself. Your online video instructions help tremendously giving your customers the confidence they need to make their own installations.
Thanks for a great purchase!
Shane

by:

Took a little longer than I expected because I didn't want to run the wire to the battery along the frame figuring it would eventually rub through and short out, so I ran it inside under the door sill trim plates on the drivers side and had to drill a small hole in the firewall with a rubber grommet under the dash to get it to the engine compartment. Green wires to the passenger side could have been a bit longer due to where I had to mount the control box. Works fine

by:

Product works as advertised, easily connects into existing wiring. However this is not an easy installation, made harder by the way they're constructing cars these days. Removal of inside left panel of Mazda CX5 is not easy . The running of the lead to the battery takes up a good part of a day, due to the fact that Mazda has three covers under the car that must be removed to run wire.

by:

As a retired (42 years in field operations & maintenance) electronics tech, I have designed and built a lot of wiring harnesses. This looks like a pretty good wiring kit. It is complete with a minimum of wire splicing required. Quality of parts and workmanship looks good. Installation instructions are clear and useful.

by:

Excellent product, plug and play simplicity.

Watch
the installation video first, it's excellent and will save you from accidentally damaging trim pieces or connectors upon disassembly.

by:

The wiring was very easy to install. I ran the power wire on the inside along the driver side and poked through the top of the boot in the firewall. I also put the trailer cable itself through the 1" plug on the driver's side rear that worked out great and used some silicone caulk to seal it up .

  • Is There An Installation Video For The # ETBC7 7-Way Installation Kit For A 2015 Mazda CX-5
Hi Erin, We unfortunately do not have an installation video for the # ETBC7 kit in a Mazda CX-5 but the process is going to be the same for each car. I typically start by mounting the # ETBC7 to the trailer hitch crosstube with a no-drill mounting bracket. With your crosstube being hidden behind the fascia you'll want the long bracket # 18136 and need to face it down. You can either have the 7-way face down or you can stick it in a vice and bend the 7-way side of the bracket up so that...

  • What Parts are Needed to Tow a Trailer with a 2016 Mazda CX-5 and How Much Can it Tow
So I pulled up an online copy of your owner's manual to see if I can help you make some sense of it. One thing is for sure, the terminology is pretty misleading and can be confusing. The main takeway, I think you need to be concerned with is the gross combined vehicle rating (GCWR). It also talks about the total trailer weight (TTW) or 2,000 pounds but when you read what they define as the TTW it gets too confusing. I think you can simplify it by using the GCWR which the manual states...

  • Trailer Hitch for 2013 Mazda CX-5 and Towingi Capacity
Yes, the etrailer hitch part # e98902 is a confirmed fit for your 2013 Mazda CX-5 as it fits all models of the 2013 CX-5. The hitch is rated for towing a trailer that weighs up to 4,000 lbs. But it looks like your vehicle is only rated for towing up to 2,000 lbs so you'd be limited to that as overall capacity. For trailer wiring you'd then wan the Tekonsha kit part # 118563 as it installs very easily and also has a very reliable converter box. I attached an install video link for more info.

  • Can A Trailer Wire Harness Drain The Battery If It Has A Bad Converter Box
Hi Richard, The Tekonsha # 118563 shouldn't be able to pull enough to drain your battery within 10 minutes unless it has a wire shorting to something else but you'd likely find something very hot or smell something burning. I definitely think you have a wiring issue but without actually looking I can't confirm that the wire harness is the culprit. I would doublecheck the wiring to see if anything is brittle, burned up, or nicked and that each wire is making a secure connection. You...

This wiring harness has a powered converter so it requires a direct connection to the vehicle battery to power the trailer lights.
